Memories - Barbados Island Adventures with Rex

Together with his parents, Les and Muriel, Rex Wotton ran the West Coast Watersports center at Coral Reef hotel, just up the beach from Settlers Beach. They took hotel guest diving and on sailing excursions along the coast. He was a master seaman trained by the Royal Merchant Navy in ship navigation, sailing, diving, explosives, and marine work.

Rex was one of the most captivating Rogues in Paradise. His sense of joy and sharp wit enveloped every situation. He was independent at an early age and often disappeared for days at a time, to camp along the banks of Joes' river . He built campfires from coconut husk and twigs and cooked his catch with breadfruit, wild herbs, plantain, and edible vines. He ate mangoes, and local berries like fat pork, and sea grapes, that grow along the beach.

In his early teens, he had a habit of disappearing into the woods: Leaving home with simply the basic necessities, jeans, shirt, footwear, hunting knife, a planters hat, and little more, he lived off the land: He sheltered amidst trees, caves, and rocks, which he blanketed with shrub and debris, making a roof with palms and banana leaves. Banana leaves have many uses. Rolled up around food, they serve as a container for cooking over a fire. They create an excellent surface to serve up a meal, and can be used as a shade and a cover on which to lie down.
